Urgent Home Care in Harpenden: Help This Week

29 October 2026 | Expert Resources

Carer with an older woman and her son at home in Harpenden after the usual family carer became unwell

If the person who usually cares for your mum or dad has suddenly fallen ill, call our Harpenden team today. In urgent situations, care can usually start within a day or two, with visits from 30 minutes or overnight cover. In a medical emergency, the NHS says to call 999 first. A neighbour or relative can bridge the first hours.

To talk anything through with someone local, our Harpenden team is on 01582 824 830.

Perhaps your dad has been looking after your mum for years, and now he is the one in hospital. You might be worried about them both at once, and trying to work out who can get there tonight. Stepping in when the family carer cannot is something we have a lot of experience with, and there is a clear way through.

How quickly can urgent home care start in Harpenden?

In urgent situations, care can usually start within a day or two, as our guide to how care starts explains. On the first call we will be honest about what is realistic.

A same day start should not be assumed, so the first hours may need family, friends or neighbours.

What should you do in the first few hours?

The NHS guide to carer breaks and respite care says a relative, friend or neighbour could cover for a few hours until proper arrangements are made. It suggests that whoever steps in has:

  • Door keys, or the code to a key safe.
  • An idea of the support needed, such as making a meal or helping with medicines.
  • Written notes left in a prominent place, including essential information on medicines.

If the person who is ill needs medical help right now, the NHS says to call NHS 111, or 999 or go to A&E in an emergency.

What will we ask when you call?

Our first priority is to understand what you are going through and build a picture of what daily life looks like for your parent. It helps to know:

  • What the family carer usually did, and at what times of day.
  • Your parent's medicines and GP surgery.
  • Who has a key, and who else in the family can help.
  • Whether the carer is likely to be away for days or longer.

What happens next?

  1. An informal chat. We usually come out to meet your parent, answer their questions and make sure they are comfortable.
  2. A care plan and written quote. We propose a plan with your involvement and theirs, and you receive a written quote before anything begins.
  3. A small care team. A manager is usually involved in the first week, introducing the carers and making sure everything is stable and safe.

Who else can help in Hertfordshire?

Hertfordshire County Council says the quickest option might be to contact a care service yourself. HertsHelp, its free advice service, is on 0300 123 4044, and is open at weekends from 10am to 4pm. Your parent's GP can advise on health questions.

How Starling Homecare can help

Help at short notice keeps your parent at home and gives the family carer room to recover. Visiting care runs from 30 minute visits, 7am to 10pm, covering personal care, meals and medication prompting. Overnight care runs from 10pm to 7am, and live-in care, including care for couples, is there if both parents need support.

When the family carer is home again, visits can become regular respite, so the caring is shared rather than carried alone. Our guide to respite care in Harpenden explains how that can work. There are no long-term contracts.

Areas we cover

Starling Homecare's carers visit people at home in St Albans, Harpenden, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted, Tring, Radlett and Shenley, Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield, Potters Bar, Hitchin and Hertford, and we arrange live-in care across Hertfordshire.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get urgent home care in Batford or Southdown?

Yes. Our Harpenden team, on 01582 824 830, covers Batford, Southdown and the rest of the AL5 postcodes. In urgent situations, such as a family carer suddenly falling ill, care can usually start within a day or two, after a phone call, an informal chat with your parent and a written quote.

What happens to Mum if Dad, her carer, goes into hospital?

First, make sure she is not alone without help. The NHS suggests a relative, friend or neighbour can cover for a few hours, with keys and written notes on her medicines. Then call a care provider: Starling Homecare can usually start care within a day or two in urgent situations.

Is urgent home care a long-term commitment?

No. With Starling Homecare there are no long-term or fixed-term contracts. Care can cover the weeks while a family carer recovers, then reduce or stop, or carry on as regular respite visits if that helps. Every family receives a written quote before anything begins, so you know the cost.
