Home Care Costs in Potters Bar: What Families Pay

3 November 2026 | Expert Resources

Carer going through a care plan and home care costs with an older woman and her son at home in Potters Bar

Home care costs in Potters Bar start from £34 a visit with Starling Homecare, for visits from 30 minutes. Each visit is priced on its own, not by the clock, and you receive a written quote before anything begins. Live-in care starts from £255 a day. Hertfordshire County Council may contribute if savings are under £23,250.

To talk anything through with someone local, our Potters Bar team is on 01707 714 000.

You may be searching from somewhere else entirely: London, another county, or your desk at work. Arranging care for a parent you cannot see every day brings its own worry, and not knowing what anything costs makes it harder to have the conversation with them, or with your brothers and sisters.

Setting up care for a parent while the family lives further away is something our team knows well, and there is a straightforward way to do it.

What does home care cost in Potters Bar?

Visiting care with Starling Homecare starts from £34 a visit. Our visiting care page explains that longer visits cost more, weekend visits are slightly higher and there are no hidden fees.

  • Visiting care: from £34 a visit, visits from 30 minutes, any day from 7am to 10pm.
  • Overnight care: 10pm to 7am, set out in your written quote.
  • Live-in care: from £255 a day.
  • Live-in care for couples: from £295 a day, with a care plan for each partner.

Regulated home care is VAT exempt, and there are no long-term or fixed-term contracts.

How much might a week of care cost?

As a simple illustration at our starting rate, one visit a day at £34 a visit is £238 a week. A morning and an evening visit each day, at that same starting rate, is £476 a week.

Those are starting rates, not a quote. Visit length and weekends shape the real figure, which your written quote confirms.

How do families arrange care in Potters Bar from a distance?

Our Potters Bar team covers the EN6 area, including Cuffley, Northaw and South Mimms, with Brookmans Park and Welham Green looked after by the same team.

When you live further away, cost is partly about what you no longer need to do in person. For example, if you are in London and your mum is in Cuffley, a lunchtime visit might cover a hot meal, her tablets and a chat, so your weekend visits can be time together rather than jobs. With your mum's permission, family members can read the visit notes, so you know how she is between phone calls.

Hospital trips can also shape the plan. The Royal Free London says Barnet Hospital has a busy emergency department and an urgent treatment centre, and the NHS lists outpatient appointments at Potters Bar Hospital on Barnet Road. Visits can include going with your parent to appointments, which is priced in the quote like any other visit.

Will Hertfordshire County Council pay towards care?

It may contribute. Hertfordshire County Council says that if someone has less than £23,250, it will work out how much they need to pay towards their care. For care at home, the property they live in is not counted.

The council first agrees what care it can provide, through an assessment, and then talks about money. It says an assessment does not commit anyone to anything, and that the quickest option might be to contact a care service yourself. HertsHelp, its free advice service, is on 0300 123 4044.

Is Attendance Allowance worth checking?

Yes, if your parent is of State Pension age and needs help because of a disability or health condition. GOV.UK lists two weekly rates:

  • £76.70 for frequent help or constant supervision during the day, or supervision at night.
  • £114.60 for help or supervision throughout day and night, or where a medical professional has said someone is nearing the end of life.

GOV.UK says your parent does not have to have someone caring for them to claim. Our article on Attendance Allowance criteria explains who qualifies.

How Starling Homecare can help

On the first call, our priority is to understand what you are going through and the challenges you are facing. We build a picture of what life looks like today for your mum or dad, and you will get real prices on that call.

Usually, the best next step is for us to come out and have a chat with your parent. It is informal: a conversation to make sure they are comfortable, answer their questions and learn more about them.

We then propose a care plan with your involvement and theirs, and a written quote. A small care team is allocated, and a manager is usually involved in the first week, introducing the carers and making sure things are settled. Visits can cover personal care, meals, medication prompting, companionship and help around the house, and can increase as needs change, with overnight or live-in care later if needed.

Our guide to caring for elderly parents from a distance has more on the practical side, and our live-in care costs guide sets out the full-time option.

Frequently asked questions

How much is home care in Potters Bar per week?

Starling Homecare's visiting care starts from £34 a visit, with visits from 30 minutes. At that starting rate, one visit a day is £238 a week and two visits a day is £476 a week. Longer visits and weekends cost more. Every family receives a written quote with the real figure before anything begins.

Can I arrange care for my dad in Cuffley if I live in London?

Yes. Our Potters Bar team, on 01707 714 000, covers Cuffley, Northaw, South Mimms and Potters Bar. Much of the arranging happens by phone, then we visit your dad for an informal chat. With his permission, you can read the visit notes, so you can see how he is getting on from wherever you are.

Is my parent's home counted when paying for care at home?

Not for care at home, according to Hertfordshire County Council. The council says that if someone has less than £23,250, excluding the property they live in, it works out how much they pay towards their care. A council assessment comes first, and the council says having one does not commit anyone to anything.

Wherever you are reading this from, a phone call is often the quickest way to a real figure for your mum or dad in Potters Bar or Cuffley. Our Potters Bar team is on 01707 714 000, and you will be talking to someone who arranges care every day.
