Home Care Costs in Hemel Hempstead: What Families Pay

28 October 2026 | Expert Resources

Carer going through a written quote with an older man and his daughter, explaining home care costs in Hemel Hempstead

Home care costs in Hemel Hempstead with Starling Homecare start from £34 a visit for visiting care, with visits from 30 minutes, and from £255 a day for live-in care. Every family receives a written quote before anything begins. Hertfordshire County Council may contribute if savings are under £23,250, and Attendance Allowance can help too.

You might be trying to work out what care would cost before you have even raised it with your mum or dad. Worrying about money is a normal part of planning, and so is not knowing what is fair. Brothers and sisters may also have different ideas about what to spend.

Questions about cost are some of the most useful ones to ask early, and our team answers them every day. Here is how pricing works, in plain figures.

How much does home care cost in Hemel Hempstead?

Visiting care is priced per visit, not by the clock, from £34 a visit. Visits start at 30 minutes, longer visits cost more, and weekend visits are a little higher. Live-in care starts from £255 a day, or from £295 a day for couples.

As an illustration at our starting rates only:

  • One visit a day at our starting rate of £34 a visit is £238 a week.
  • Two visits a day, morning and evening, at that starting rate is £476 a week.
  • Live-in care at our starting rate of £255 a day is £1,785 a week.

Your written quote gives the real figure. There are no long-term or fixed-term contracts, and regulated home care is VAT exempt.

What changes home care costs in Hemel Hempstead?

The cost follows the pattern of help your parent needs. The main things that shape it are:

  • How long each visit is. A 30 minute visit suits a focused task such as medication or a meal; longer visits suit personal care or getting out.
  • How many visits a day. One check-in costs less than morning, lunch and bedtime visits.
  • Weekends. Weekend visits are a little higher.
  • Nights. Overnight care, from 10pm to 7am, is a separate service.
  • Round the clock support. Live-in care is priced by the day.

How do families in Hemel Hempstead use visits?

Every plan is built around the person, but here is one example of how visits might fit around life in the town. A parent in Gadebridge might have a short weekday morning visit for medication and breakfast, and one longer visit a week for a walk in Gadebridge Park and a coffee. A parent in Leverstock Green or Bennetts End might need visits timed around hospital appointments.

Hospital journeys are part of planning here. West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which serves Dacorum, says on its trust overview that Watford General is at the heart of its acute emergency services, while Hemel Hempstead Hospital offers services such as MRI scans and outpatient clinics. After a stay in Watford, extra visits for a few weeks can then step down again.

Will Hertfordshire County Council help pay?

It depends on your parent's money and needs. Hertfordshire County Council's page on paying for care says that if someone receives care at home and has assets over £23,250, not counting the home they live in, they pay the full cost. Below that, the council works out how much they pay.

The first step is an assessment of needs. The council says having one does not commit you to anything. HertsHelp, its free advice service, is on 0300 123 4044. Our page on the care means test explains more.

What help does not depend on savings?

Attendance Allowance is the main one for older people. GOV.UK currently lists two weekly rates:

  • £76.70 a week for frequent help or constant supervision during the day, or supervision at night.
  • £114.60 a week for help or supervision throughout both day and night, or if a medical professional has said someone is nearing the end of life.

GOV.UK says it is for people who have reached State Pension age and have needed help for at least 6 months. Age UK explains it is not means-tested and does not have to be spent on a carer. Our article answering whether Attendance Allowance is means-tested goes further.

How Starling Homecare can help

A clear price lets you plan, and the right help keeps your parent at home and your visits about family rather than chores. We would usually start with a phone call, then an informal chat at home, then a care plan and written quote. Our visiting care covers:

  • Visiting care from 30 minute visits, seven days a week between 7am and 10pm.
  • Personal care, medication prompting and support, meals and help around the house.
  • Companionship, including trips out locally.
  • Overnight care, and live-in care if needs grow.

Visits can increase or reduce as needs change. For the live-in side, see our guide to live-in care costs in Hertfordshire, and for another town's picture, our St Albans guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a home care visit cost in Hemel Hempstead?

With Starling Homecare, visiting care in Hemel Hempstead starts from £34 a visit, with visits from 30 minutes. Longer visits cost more and weekend visits are a little higher. One visit a day at that starting rate is £238 a week. Your written quote, given before anything begins, sets out the real figure.

Is home care cheaper than live-in care?

For a few visits a day, usually yes. One visit a day at our starting rate of £34 is £238 a week, while live-in care starts from £255 a day. Once someone needs help through the day and night, live-in care can make more sense. A written quote for each option helps you compare fairly.
