Winter Fuel Payment 2026/27 in Hertfordshire: What to Check for an Older Relative

The Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2026 to 2027 is paid automatically to most people born on or before 27 June 1960. GOV.UK says most eligible people will be paid in November or December 2026. For families in Hertfordshire the useful questions are practical ones: does your relative know it is coming, will it be reclaimed through tax, and is someone keeping an eye on whether the house is warm enough once the weather turns?

Who can get the payment this winter

According to GOV.UK, anyone born on or before 27 June 1960 could get between £100 and £300 to help with heating costs. Most people who are eligible do not need to apply. A letter or notification arrives in October or November telling them the amount, and the payment follows.

The guidance also has a section on checking whether you need to claim, so it is worth reading for anyone whose circumstances are not straightforward. If you are helping a parent or an older neighbour, the simplest first step is to ask whether the letter has arrived and to keep it somewhere safe.

The £35,000 income rule

GOV.UK states that if your total income is over £35,000, HMRC will reclaim the Winter Fuel Payment. The guidance says your partner's income does not count towards that figure. Someone whose pension, savings interest and other income sit close to the line may want to look at their own position before the money arrives. We cannot give tax advice, so HMRC or a qualified adviser is the right place for that question.

Look at the letter, not just the payment

When an older person lives alone, post can pile up unopened. A letter about a payment is a good reason to sit down together, open the pile and see whether anything else needs attention. If your relative has stopped opening post altogether, that is worth noticing in its own right. It is often one of the earlier signs that daily life has become harder to manage than anyone has said out loud.

Keeping the house warm is the real question

A payment only helps if the heating is used. If your relative is reluctant to put it on, it is kind to ask why, without making them feel watched. For some people it is habit, for others it is worry about bills, and for others it is simply that the dial has become hard to read or reach.

Regular visits make a practical difference here. A carer who calls in will notice how the house feels, make hot drinks and meals, remind someone to take their medication, and let the family know if something does not seem right. Our guide to later life care at home explains what a visit can include, and our winter vaccinations guide for Hertfordshire covers another job worth doing before December.

Winter Fuel Payment is separate from benefits that look at care needs rather than age. If your relative needs help with daily life, our article on how much Attendance Allowance is sets out what that benefit pays.

When more help at home is the sensible next step

For some families, a payment and a few phone calls are enough. For others, winter is when it becomes clear that someone needs company, meals and a settled routine. Visiting care starts from £34 an hour, and live-in care from £255 a day. These are starting rates, and a price is agreed after an assessment. Our St Albans team can talk through what would suit your relative, and our live-in care page explains the alternative to visits.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to apply for the Winter Fuel Payment?

Most eligible people are paid automatically. GOV.UK says notifications arrive in October or November and most payments are made in November or December 2026. It also has a section for checking whether you need to claim.

Does a partner's income count towards the £35,000 limit?

GOV.UK states that your partner's income does not count towards the £35,000 figure. HMRC reclaims the payment if your own total income is over that amount.

Can home care help someone keep their home warm in winter?

A regular carer will notice how the home feels, make hot drinks and meals and pass on any concern to the family. They do not replace a heating engineer or a benefits adviser, but they are a regular, familiar person in the home.
