Harpenden Memory Lane Café: What to Expect Before a First Visit

Harpenden has a weekly Memory Lane Café for people living with dementia and their families. It runs every Monday afternoon, and the town council describes it as a welcoming and understanding place to have tea and cake. If you have been wondering whether it would suit someone you look after, this is a plain account of what the council says about it, and a few things worth thinking about before a first visit.

When and where it meets

According to Harpenden Town Council, the café meets every Monday from 2:00pm to 3:30pm, except on Bank Holidays. It is held at The Salvation Army on Leyton Green in Harpenden. It is run as a partnership between Harpenden Town Council, The Salvation Army and The Harpenden Trust's Wellbeing Hub.

What the council says it offers

The council describes tea and cakes in a welcoming and understanding environment, alongside activities and entertainment. Taking part in the activities is optional, so someone can simply sit, drink their tea and listen. The council also says people can get help and advice from outside organisations such as Citizens Advice, which can be useful for the family member who comes along.

The page does not state a charge for attending, so it is worth asking when you get in touch.

Who it is for

The café is for people living with dementia and their families. That second half matters: the café is described as being for the family as well as the person with dementia.

Thinking about a first visit

None of the following comes from the council. It is the kind of preparation that tends to help.

  • Ring or email beforehand to ask any practical questions. The council lists 01582 768278 and [email protected].
  • Go together the first time, and decide in advance that it is fine to leave early.
  • Choose a time of day when your relative is usually at their best.
  • Tell them where you are going in simple, relaxed terms, and keep the plan short.

If it does not feel right the first time, you can simply try again another week, or decide it is not for you.

Where the café fits alongside everything else

A weekly café is an hour and a half of the week. Dementia asks for support on the other days too. Our guide to dementia care at home in Harpenden explains how regular visits are built around a familiar routine, and our piece on power of attorney for dementia in Harpenden covers the planning that is worth doing early. Our dementia care page sets out what we do, and our Harpenden team is happy to talk it through. Visiting care starts from £34 an hour and live-in care from £255 a day. These are starting rates, and a price is agreed after an assessment.
