Home Care Costs in Radlett and Shenley: What Families Pay

1 November 2026 | Expert Resources

Carer talking through home care costs with an older man and his daughter at home in Shenley, Hertfordshire

Home care costs in Radlett and Shenley start from £34 a visit with Starling Homecare, for visits from 30 minutes. We price each visit, rather than charging by the clock, and every family receives a written quote before anything begins. Live-in care starts from £255 a day. Hertfordshire County Council may help if savings are below £23,250.

You might be looking at prices because something has shifted: your dad managing less well alone, or your mum quietly doing everything for him and tired. It is hard to plan without a straight figure, and harder if a brother or sister sees the money side differently.

Working out what care will cost is a conversation our team has every day, and there is a clear way through it.

How much does home care cost in Radlett and Shenley?

Visiting care starts from £34 a visit, and visits start at 30 minutes. As our visiting care page explains, longer visits cost more and weekend visits are slightly higher.

  • Visiting care: from £34 a visit, with visits from 30 minutes, any day between 7am and 10pm.
  • Overnight care: between 10pm and 7am, priced in your written quote.
  • Live-in care: from £255 a day.
  • Live-in care for couples: from £295 a day, with each partner having their own care plan.

Regulated home care is VAT exempt, and there are no long-term or fixed-term contracts.

What could a week of visits cost?

As an illustration at our starting rate only:

  • One visit a day at our starting rate of £34 a visit is £238 a week.
  • Two visits a day at that starting rate is £476 a week.

These are starting rates, not a quote. Longer and weekend visits change the figure, and your written quote gives the real one.

How do families in Shenley and Radlett tend to use visits?

Radlett, Shenley, Letchmore Heath and Aldenham sit close together in this part of Hertsmere, and we plan visits with honest travel times between Radlett and Shenley rather than optimistic ones, so a visit arrives when it is meant to.

Cost follows the shape of the day. For example, a husband in Shenley who has been helping his wife to wash and dress each morning might hand over only that one visit. A daughter working in London might add a teatime visit for her dad in Radlett, so someone checks he has eaten and has his tablets.

Sometimes a hospital stay prompts the question. West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals says Watford General is its core site for emergency inpatient care, and St Albans City Hospital is its elective care centre. After a stay at either, visits can reduce as your parent regains confidence, and the cost comes down with them.

Can Hertfordshire County Council help with the cost?

Possibly. Hertfordshire County Council's page on paying for care says that if someone has less than £23,250, the council will work out how much they need to pay towards their care.

For care at home, the council says the home your parent lives in is not counted towards that figure. It all starts with an assessment, which the council says does not commit anyone to anything.

The council notes that the quickest option might be to contact a care service yourself. HertsHelp, the council's free advice service, is on 0300 123 4044.

Could Attendance Allowance help pay for care?

It may. GOV.UK says Attendance Allowance is paid at two weekly rates to people of State Pension age or older who need help because of a disability or health condition:

  • £76.70 a week for frequent help or constant supervision during the day, or supervision at night.
  • £114.60 a week for help or supervision throughout both day and night, or where a medical professional has said someone is nearing the end of life.

Your parent does not need someone caring for them to claim, and usually must have needed help for at least six months. Our guide on how to claim Attendance Allowance walks through the form.

How Starling Homecare can help

On the first call, our priority is to understand what you are going through and build a picture of your parent's life today. Usually, the best next step is for us to come out for an informal chat with your mum or dad, to answer their questions and learn what matters to them.

From there, we propose a care plan with your involvement and theirs, then a written quote. Visits can cover personal care, meals, medication prompting, companionship, help around the house, and respite for a family carer.

A small team of carers looks after your parent, and a manager is usually there in the first week to introduce them. Visits can increase as needs change, and overnight or live-in care is there later if it is ever needed. Our guide to live-in care costs in Hertfordshire covers the other end of the scale, and our St Albans guide covers costs in the neighbouring city.
