Home Care Costs in Hitchin: What Families Pay

4 November 2026 | Expert Resources

Home care costs in Hitchin start from £34 a visit with Starling Homecare, for visits from 30 minutes. We price per visit, not by the clock, and every family receives a written quote before anything begins. Live-in care starts from £255 a day. Hertfordshire County Council may help with costs if savings are under £23,250.

Often the question of cost arrives with a date attached. Your mum is coming home from hospital on Thursday, or your dad has had a fall and is not quite himself. You might be worried about committing to something you cannot see the end of, and unsure who to ask.

Planning care around a hospital stay is something we do often, and there is a sensible, flexible way to approach the cost.

How much does home care cost in Hitchin?

Visiting care starts from £34 a visit, with visits from 30 minutes. As our visiting care page explains, longer visits cost more and weekend visits are slightly higher, with no hidden fees.

  • Visiting care: from £34 a visit, between 7am and 10pm, seven days a week.
  • Overnight care: 10pm to 7am, priced in your written quote.
  • Live-in care: from £255 a day.
  • Live-in care for couples: from £295 a day.

Regulated home care is VAT exempt, so the figure in your quote is what you pay.

What would a week of visits cost?

To give a sense of scale, here is an illustration using our starting rate only. One visit a day at our starting rate of £34 a visit is £238 a week. Three visits a day, morning, lunch and bedtime, at that starting rate is £714 a week.

Starting rates are not a quote. Visit length, weekends and what your parent needs all change the figure, and your written quote sets out the real one.

Can care in Hitchin be short-term after a hospital stay?

Yes. There are no long-term or fixed-term contracts, so care can follow your parent's recovery rather than a contract. Our post-hospital care aims to put support in place quickly, ideally ready for the day your parent comes home.

East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust says the 24/7 emergency department is at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage. For a family in Ickleford or Great Offley, coming home from the Lister might look like this:

  1. The first week or two: morning and evening visits for washing, dressing, meals and medication reminders.
  2. As confidence returns: the lunchtime or evening visit stops, and one morning visit remains.
  3. Later: visits end, or carry on as a weekly visit for shopping and company if your parent enjoys it.

Because each visit is priced individually, the weekly cost falls as visits are reduced. This is an example of how a plan can change, not a promise of how recovery will go.

Will Hertfordshire County Council help with the cost?

It might. Hertfordshire County Council says that if someone has less than £23,250, it will work out how much they need to pay towards their care. For care at home, the home they live in is excluded from that figure.

The council starts with an assessment, and it says having one does not commit anyone to anything. It also says the quickest option might be to contact a care service yourself. HertsHelp, its free advice service, is on 0300 123 4044, from 9am to 5pm on most weekdays, until 7pm on Wednesdays, and 10am to 4pm at weekends.

Does Attendance Allowance help in the short term?

Usually not straight away. GOV.UK says someone normally needs to have needed help for at least six months, with different rules for people nearing the end of life, who might get it more quickly. For longer-term needs, it pays:

  • £76.70 a week for frequent help or constant supervision during the day, or supervision at night.
  • £114.60 a week for help or supervision through both day and night, or near the end of life.

How Starling Homecare can help

When you call, our first priority is to understand what you are going through and the challenges you are facing. We start to build a picture of what life looks like today for your mum or dad, and we give real prices on that first call.

The best next step is usually for us to come out for an informal chat, at home or once your parent is back. It is a relaxed conversation to answer their questions, learn about them and make sure they are comfortable with the plan.

We then propose a care plan with your involvement and theirs. A small care team is allocated, and a manager is usually involved in the first week, introducing the carers and making sure everything is stable and safe. Carers help with personal care, meals, medication prompting and getting to follow-up appointments, and they pass any concerns to the family or GP. They do not give injections or carry out clinical tasks.

Frequently asked questions

How much does home care cost in Hitchin each week?

With Starling Homecare, visiting care starts from £34 a visit, for visits from 30 minutes. At that starting rate, one visit a day is £238 a week. Longer visits and weekends cost more, and the number of visits makes the biggest difference. Your written quote confirms the real figure before anything begins.

Can I get home care in Ickleford or Great Offley after hospital?

Yes. Our Hitchin team, on 01462 534739, covers Ickleford, Great Offley, Walsworth and the town itself. In urgent situations, including a hospital discharge, care can usually start within a day or two. Visits can then reduce as your parent recovers, because there are no long-term or fixed-term contracts.

Is there a minimum contract for home care?

Not with Starling Homecare. There are no long-term or fixed-term contracts, so a few weeks of visits after a hospital stay is fine. Every family receives a written quote before anything begins, setting out the exact cost of the visits agreed, and the plan can be changed as needs change.

If your mum or dad in Hitchin, Ickleford or Great Offley needs help soon, our Hitchin team is on 01462 534739. You will be talking to someone who arranges care every day, and who can tell you plainly what it would cost.
