Community Transport in Welwyn Hatfield: Keeping the Weekly Shop Going When a Parent Stops Driving

23 October 2026 | Expert Resources

A parent who no longer drives can still do their own weekly shop, and community transport in Welwyn Hatfield is one practical way to make that happen. A door-to-door shopper bus, a volunteer community car and the county's Dial-a-Ride service all carry older people from home to the supermarket and back, with home help filling the gaps around them.

To talk anything through with someone local, our Welwyn Hatfield team is on 01707 714 000.

Giving up the car keys is a big step, and the weekly shop is often one of the first routines to feel harder. Choosing your own groceries and seeing familiar faces in town both matter.

Our article on domestic support in Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield covers keeping the house in order; this piece is about getting out to the shops.

How does the shopper bus work in Welwyn Hatfield?

Communities 1st runs a door-to-door shopper bus that collects people from home, takes them to a local supermarket and brings them back. According to its shopper bus page, volunteers can help carry bags, fetch items and help people on and off the bus. The minibus is low-floor and accessible.

The Welwyn Hatfield fare is £5 return. The page lists these regular trips:

  • Welwyn Garden City: Aldi, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Waitrose, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
  • Welwyn: the same four shops, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
  • Hatfield and Welham Green: Aldi, Asda and Tesco, on Thursdays.
  • Hatfield Villages and Welwyn Garden City: Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose, on Fridays.
  • Cuffley and Welwyn Garden City: Morrisons and Tesco, on Wednesdays.

Booking is on 01727 649980 or by email at travel@communities1st.org.uk.

A volunteer community car for other errands

The Communities 1st Community Car scheme covers the whole of Welwyn Hatfield, with volunteer drivers taking people door to door for shopping, hospital appointments and visits.

The costs on its page are:

  • 60p a mile, counted from the driver's home and back again.
  • A £5 minimum charge for journeys of 8 miles or less.
  • Membership of £10 a year, with the year running September to August.

Trips must be booked at least 5 days ahead. Most cars take a folded wheelchair, but passengers need to get into the car themselves, as the volunteers are not trained to give physical help.

The same phone number and email apply. The two Communities 1st pages give different opening hours for the phone line, so check when booking.

Dial-a-Ride for people over 75

Hertfordshire County Council lists Dial-a-Ride as a door-to-door service for people over 75 and anyone with a permanent disability. Its transport page gives the number as 01992 556771, open Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 4:30pm.

It costs £2.10 for the first mile and 50p for each mile after. You can apply online or by phone. The page does not list the areas it serves, so ask whether it covers your parent's address when you call.

Using the bus into Hatfield

For a parent who is steady on their feet, the ordinary bus may still work. Intalink says five routes were extended in September 2026 to serve the Parkhouse Bus Station in Hatfield, with revised times:

  • 230, Welwyn Garden City to St Albans, from 7 September.
  • 312, Bell Bar to Hatfield, from 7 September.
  • 243, Hatfield to High Barnet, from 13 September.
  • 341 and 641, Broxbourne to Hatfield, from 13 September.
  • X10, Hatfield to Luton, from 27 September.

Intalink's contact number is 0300 123 4050.

Choosing the right community transport in Welwyn Hatfield

A simple way to decide is to match the option to the trip:

  • The big weekly shop: the shopper bus, with volunteers to help with bags.
  • A one-off errand or appointment: the community car, booked 5 days ahead.
  • Over 75 and needing door-to-door help on a different day: Dial-a-Ride.
  • Confident with buses: the regular routes, with timetables from Intalink.

It helps to keep the booking numbers on a card by the phone. If a parent's health changes, their GP is the right person to ask about travelling safely.

Where home help fits around the shopping trip

Transport gets the shopping home. Heavy bags, high cupboards and the cooking that follows can be harder.

Our domestic support includes meal preparation, grocery help and running errands such as the weekly shop. A visit can be timed for shopping day, so the carer can help put everything away and make a meal from the fresh food.

Companion visits can work the same way, with a familiar carer for a chat over lunch on a quieter day. Visits run at consistent times with a care plan agreed with the family, and we are a CQC-regulated home care provider.

Visiting care is from £34 an hour, and live-in care is from £255 a day (couples from £295 a day). These are starting rates, and a price is agreed after an assessment.

Our Welwyn Hatfield team supports families from Welwyn and Digswell to Hatfield and Welham Green. You can reach them on 01707 714 000 or at welwynhatfield@starlinghomecare.co.uk, and read more on our Welwyn Hatfield home care page.
