Autumn Days Out with an Older Parent in Hatfield: Mill Green and Old Hatfield

22 October 2026 | Expert Resources

Two gentle days out with an older parent near Hatfield this autumn are Mill Green Museum and Watermill, open on Fridays and Sundays until 29 November, and Old Hatfield, home to Hatfield House, whose park stays open at weekends now the House and Gardens have closed for the season. Both can work well for someone who tires easily, as long as you plan around parking, toilets and uneven ground before you set off.

To talk anything through with someone local, our Welwyn Hatfield team is on 01707 714 000.

Why plan days out with an older parent now?

The weeks before winter are a good window. Mill Green's season ends on 29 November 2026 and it does not reopen until 5 March 2027, so an outing there needs to happen in the next few weeks.

An outing does more than fill an afternoon. For a parent who has been mostly at home, even a short trip can be something to look forward to and talk about afterwards. Our piece on companionship care in Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield looks at keeping the whole week full, not just the odd special day.

Mill Green Museum and Watermill: what to know

Mill Green Museum and Watermill is on Bush Hall Lane, Hatfield, AL9 5PD. According to the museum's FAQ page, it is open on Fridays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm, with last entry at 3.30pm. There is a small café that opens during museum opening times.

This autumn there is a reason to go. Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council announced on 7 September 2026 that a new exhibition, A Milling Milestone, marks the 40th anniversary of the mill's restoration. It runs from 18 September to 29 November 2026.

The exhibition traces the mill from its mention in the Domesday Book through to its restoration and the present day. Freshly milled flour is on sale in the Miller's shop.

Access notes for Mill Green

These points come from the museum's own pages, and they are worth reading before you go:

  • Carers: carers are admitted free. Book the registered disabled guest's ticket as usual, then show a CEA carer card at the entrance.
  • Parking: the car park takes around 10 to 15 cars and includes a disabled parking space. There is also parking on Bush Hall Lane.
  • Toilets: there are four public toilets, including two accessible toilets.
  • The mill itself: there is no buggy access to the first floor of the mill, so check in advance if your parent uses a wheelchair.
  • Paying: the visit us page says it is a cashless site, with card payments only.

Old Hatfield and Hatfield House: honest access notes

Hatfield House sits in Old Hatfield, and its accessibility page is unusually detailed. The House and Gardens are now closed for the season. Hatfield Park is open on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays from 10.30am to 4pm (last entry 3pm), and is also open from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November for Witches & Wizards Week. The notes on the House and West Garden below are for when they reopen, so check Hatfield House's opening times before you go. Carers are admitted free into the grounds if a carers card can be shown. Disabled parking is in the main car park, reached through George's Gate.

Inside the House, chairs are available for transfer use, including for older visitors and others with walking difficulties. The lift has a strict weight limit of 204kg, including the wheelchair and companion, and its entrance is 66cm wide on the lower floors and 63cm on the first floor.

Outdoors, the paths in the West Garden are gravel, with a variety of terrain. There are benches around the West Garden and North Front. The park walks are through parkland, over grassy, uneven and often muddy ground.

For booking, advice or help, Hatfield House asks visitors to call 01707 287010.

Dates in Old Hatfield before Christmas

The Hatfield House Christmas page lists two dates that could suit days out with an older parent:

  • Old Hatfield Farmers Market: Sunday 15 November 2026, in Salisbury Square, Old Hatfield.
  • Christmas Candlelight Concert: Saturday 5 December 2026, in the Old Palace. Check each listing for times, tickets and access.

Making an outing easier

A good day out with an older parent is usually a short one. A few habits can help:

  • Plan one main thing, with a sit down and a hot drink built in.
  • Know where the nearest accessible toilet is before you arrive.
  • Take a carer card, a blue badge and a bank card, not just cash.
  • Head home while your parent still has energy to spare.

If your parent has a health condition that might affect a trip, ask their GP or pharmacist first.

How a companion carer can make the trip possible

Not every family can take a Friday off. Companionship care means a familiar carer can go along instead, at a pace that suits your parent.

Our companionship care covers conversation, walks and going along to shops, clubs and appointments, as well as outings like these. Visits keep consistent times and follow a care plan agreed with the family.

We are a CQC-regulated home care provider. Visiting care is from £34 an hour, and live-in care is from £255 a day (couples from £295 a day). These are starting rates, and a price is agreed after an assessment.

Families from Old Hatfield to Brookmans Park and Welham Green can reach our Welwyn Hatfield team on 01707 714 000 or at welwynhatfield@starlinghomecare.co.uk. You can read more about our private home care in Welwyn Hatfield.

Common questions about days out with an older parent in Hatfield

Do carers pay to enter Mill Green Museum?

No. Carers are admitted free when the registered disabled guest's ticket is booked and a CEA carer card is shown.

When does Mill Green Museum close for the winter?

The season runs until 29 November 2026, and the museum reopens on 5 March 2027.

Is Hatfield House suitable for a wheelchair user?

Partly. The House and Gardens are closed for the season, and the park, open at weekends, is grassy, uneven and often muddy. When the House reopens, there is a lift with a 204kg limit and narrow doors, and transfer chairs are available inside. It is worth calling 01707 287010 first.

Can a carer come along on a day out?

Yes. Companionship care can include outings with a familiar carer, set out in a care plan agreed with the family.

A slice of cake at the mill or a stroll round a market can mean a great deal to a parent who has been at home more than usual. A little planning on access usually makes the day.
