Last week, Starling Homecare brought together the Fleetville community for an afternoon of expert advice, honest conversation, and plenty of tea and biscuits. From practical exercises to heartfelt stories, it was an event that reminded us all why talking openly about staying active and safe as we age really matters.
Last week, we had a fantastic afternoon at Fleetville Community Centre in St Albans, where Starling Homecare organised, a special talk focused on fall prevention and staying active as we age. The room was full of familiar and new faces from the local community, all keen to learn and share, the energy from the moment people arrived was special.
We were lucky enough to be joined by an experienced physiotherapist who has a real passion for helping older people stay mobile and independent. Rather than a formal lecture, the session felt much more like a conversation, our physiotherapist walked the group through a series of exercises that can easily be worked into a daily routine, explaining clearly how each one helps with balance, strength, and stability.
What made the afternoon particularly special was how candid and open people were willing to be with discussions on personal experiences of falls and near-misses. Stories were shared, questions were asked, and a lot of reassurance was given. There is still a tendency for people to feel embarrassed or even ashamed after a fall, and moments like these go a long way in changing that. The message was clear: it happens to so many of us and talking about it openly is one of the most important things we can do.
With tea and biscuits on hand and laughter throughout, it was a genuinely lovely afternoon. We feel very fortunate to be part of such a welcoming community in Fleetville, and we hope events like this continue to bring people together in a positive and meaningful way. A huge thank you to our brilliant physiotherapist and to every single person who came along and made it such a special occasion.
